Scar Prevention Guidelines

1. Protect the Healing Area from Injury

Avoid direct sun exposure, mechanical trauma (scratching or rubbing), harsh perfumed soaps, and irritating chemicals such as alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. These can damage new tissue and delay healing.

2. Maintain Light Moisture

Keep the scar lightly moist but not wet. Avoid soaking the incision with heavy creams or moisturizers, as excess moisture can soften the tissue and increase the risk of breakdown. Controlled hydration supports natural healing.

3. Suppress Wound Inflammation

Use topical anti-inflammatory agents to reduce swelling, itching, and redness.

  • NSAIDs (e.g., Avosil®) help control inflammation with fewer side effects than steroid-based products (e.g., cortisol).

  • Antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine) may also help relieve itching and irritation during early healing.

4. Apply an Occlusive Gel Sheeting

Hydrogel or polymer gel sheets help maintain healthy hydration and raise scar temperature, creating an optimal environment for collagen remodeling and scar reduction.

5. Practice Gentle Compression

Use adhesive gel sheeting, elastic wraps, or snug sportswear to gently compress the scar area. Controlled pressure helps reduce mechanical tension, a key factor in preventing hypertrophic or raised scars.
